Pōhue PurePod

Port Levy, New Zealand

The Pōhue PurePod is just an hours drive from Christchurch, with beautiful views of the historic Port Levy bay, surrounded by rolling hills and magnificent rocky outcrops.

Your journey to the Pōhue PurePod starts with a scenic drive around Banks Peninsula past Charteris Bay and Diamond Harbour, then up over hill above Purau, before turning off the main road into the secure carparking area.

Native Bush Walk To Your PurePod

After you have parked your car and closed the gates, follow the walking track as it gently winds its way up through some regenerating native bush and past the rocky outcrop known locally as the Acropolis (named by the Greek bride of the farmer who received this land following his return from World War II).

Please note, the walk from the carpark to the Pōhue PurePod is 1.2km uphill and will take you around 25 minutes. If you would prefer a shorter walk (only 5 minutes), then the Korimako PurePod may be a better option for you

As the track winds its way out of the bush, there is one last push uphill along an old farm fence before you round a small berm and the PurePod is revealed.

Pōhue PurePod Secluded Setting

The Pōhue PurePod sits just below some macrocarpa trees, behind which you can glimpse The Monument, a rocky crag standing on the ridge between Purau and Port Levy. From the PurePod you have beautiful views across the tussock grasses and rolling hills down to the long, sheltered bay of Port Levy. With no one nearby, you can sit back, relax and soak in the views.

Things To Do

Stretch out on the deck or in the shade nearby and enjoy a complete absence of people and traffic. Comfortable deck chairs are provided, as is the most comfortable bed we can find. The Pōhue PurePod has all the facilities you require including a fabulous shower, flush toilet, crisp linen, cooking and eating equipment including a gas hob and barbeque, tea coffee and milk; as well as an assortment of games, local reference books, a telescope and a whole lot of nothing to do!

Of course, if you are feeling a little more active, take a short walk across to the Acropolis outcrop and watch the sunset or for the more active take advantage of the many nearby Banks Peninsula hiking trails. If you are staying for a couple of nights, then perhaps head across to Akaroa to swim with the dolphins or go sea kayaking before returning to the Pōhue PurePod in the afternoon to relax and take in the views.

Greystone PurePod

Waipara, New Zealand

The Greystone PurePod is set high above the award-winning Greystone vineyard, less than an hour north of Christchurch, right in the heart of the Waipara Valley wine producing region.

With the Teviotdale Hills behind and views up the Waipara Valley across to the Southern Alps, the Greystone PurePod provides a beautiful setting for you to immerse yourself in your own private slice of the New Zealand landscape.

Your journey to the Greystone PurePod starts as soon as you turn into the Greystone vineyard, and pass by the Cellar Door.

The unpaved road winds its way through the vineyard up to the PurePod car parking area – you may even see an occasional flock of sheep in the paddocks between the vines.

Native Bush Walk To Your PurePod

From the carpark, you will cross the fence over a stile and follow the walking track as it winds its way through some regenerating native bush. Keep an eye out for cabbage trees (also known as ti kouka) which are one of the most distinctive trees in the New Zealand landscape. They grow 12-20 metres high, usually have long trunks, with thick and tough cork-like bark. The leaves are long and narrow and are up to 1 metre long. The cabbage tree has lovely scented flowers in early summer, which turn into blue-whitish berries that birds love to eat.

As the track winds its way out of the bush, and makes it way to the Greystone PurePod. Please note, if you have mobility issues please let us know so we can provide an alternative route for you.

Greystone PurePod Secluded Setting

The Greystone PurePod sits on a spur in a paddock, high above the winery. While you are tucked away in your own private oasis, you have vast views down onto the winery and up the Waipara Valley. Depending on the time of the year, while relaxing on the PurePod deck, you may be able to glimpse workers in the far distance beavering away in the vines removing shoots, managing the foilage wires, picking grapes or pruning.

Things To Do

If you are feeling a little more active, then take advantage of the walking and cycling trails that pass through the Greystone winery and onto and through a number of other wineries and historic farms.

Of course, if such exploration is not quite what you desire, feel free to stretch out on the deck or in the shade nearby and enjoy a complete absence of people and traffic.

The PurePod has all the facilities you require including a fabulous shower, flush toilet, crisp linen, cooking and eating equipment including a gas hob and barbeque, tea coffee and milk; as well as an assortment of games, local reference books, a telescope and a whole lot of nothing to do! So sit back, relax in the luxury camp chairs out on the deck, or laze about in the super comfortable bed and watch nature put on a show.

You can either bring your own supplies, or preorder a hamper when you make your reservation. Made from the best available fresh local seasonal ingredients the team at the Greystone Wines Cellar Door will put together a dinner & breakfast hamper for you based on their scrumptious long lunch menu.

The hamper includes a tasting platter for a starter, while the main dish can range from beef, lamb, venison and fish (ready for you to cook yourself on either the cooktop or the barbeque), with seasonal vegetables or salad. Once you get up to the PurePod, turn around and take in the breathtaking views out to the bay and Motunau Island. In the early days of this farm, the only access was by sea, so any materials sent to or from the farm went via this bay –  imagine what it was like loading heavy wool onto small boats to be ferried out to the coastal trader ships on a cold winters day!

Please note, this PurePod is not suitable for those with mobility challenges due to the walk and the steps up to the PurePod.

PurePods Luxurious Facilities

Manakau PurePod

Kaikoura

The Manakau PurePod is a glass eco-cabin situated in a vast landscape with perfect views of the mighty Seaward Kaikōura Mountain Range (including Mt Manakau). It is only 20 minutes inland from Kaikōura and 2.5 hours north of Christchurch.

Driving into the Manakau PurePod carpark is the start of your unique PurePods adventure as you ford small streams on your way to the secure carpark near the farmhouse.

Bush Walk To Your PurePod

From the carpark, you walk down a grove of trees and across a farm track. As you enter the bush pathway on your way to the PurePod, you will encounter a grove of kanuka trees. In the summer, as the kanuka flowers, the ever present hum of pollinators hovers overhead.

Kanuka is the endemic form of vegetation on this property as parts of the farm revert back to native bush. The tree is a crucial coloniser of land recovering from deforestation, acting as a nursery plant as other species begin to regrow. Over the past 20 years over 200 acres of this property have been allowed to revert to bush, protecting waterways and hillsides from potential erosion, as well as hosting one of the largest populations of the South Island Robin found anywhere in New Zealand.

Walking out of the bush you will catch just a glimpse of your PurePod as you push on uphill. The walk is around 900 metres or 10-15 minutes. Please note, this PurePod is not suitable for those with mobility challenges due to the walk and the steps up to the PurePod.

Manakau PurePod Secluded Setting

The PurePod sits on a spur in a paddock with kanuka trees for company and birds singing all day long in the nearby gullies. As you look out from the deck the vastness of the location is overwhelming. Seemingly close enough to touch, the Seaward Kaikōura range dominates the vista. North facing, the PurePod looks straight at Mt Fyffe, snow covered for much of the year, and the mighty Manakau mountain rising to over 2600 metres, the largest peak in the Seaward Kaikōura range.

Things To Do

Behind the PurePod, steep sided hills stretching to 500 metres high invite you to explore the marked trails. Take an extra day to explore and grow to understand this rugged, vast landscape. Include the optional picnic lunch with your booking, fill a bottle of the fresh tap water and wander up the track behind the PurePod to see the magnificent views.

Of course, if such exploration is not quite what you desire, feel free to stretch out on the deck or in the shade nearby and enjoy a complete absence of people, traffic – even your cellphone will have no signal. Comfortable deck chairs are provided, as is the most comfortable bed we can find.

Kahutara PurePod

Kaikoura

The Kahutara PurePod is perched high above the Kahutara River with vast views across to the mighty Seaward Kaikōura Mountain Range. It is only 20 minutes inland from Kaikōura and 2.5 hours north of Christchurch.

Driving into the Kahutara PurePod carpark is the start of your unique PurePod adventure as you ford small streams on your way to the secure carpark near the farmhouse. From the carpark, you walk down a grove of trees and across a farm track, in the ever present company of the Seaward Kaikōura Mountain Range.

Native Bush Walk To Your PurePod

As you enter the bush pathway on your way to the PurePod, you will encounter a grove of kanuka trees. In the summer, as the kanuka flowers, the ever present hum of pollinators hovers overhead. Your track branches off here as you enjoy the private journey to the Kahutara PurePod.

The walkway continues past wetlands featuring flax and rushes, the sound of the Kahutara River close by. Then, it’s a short climb up to your PurePod to complete the 10-15 minute walk (a total walking distance of around 900m).

On arrival the craggy foothills behind the PurePod will be the dominant first impression, closely followed – as you climb the steps and stand on the deck – by a feeling of awe looking north across the river to the Seaward Kaikōura range. Please note, this PurePod is not suitable for those with mobility challenges due to the walk and the steps up to the PurePod.

Private Secluded Setting

An added benefit of the Kahutara PurePod is your own “private” range of foothills bordering the opposite side of the river. While the river is a hundred metres away, down below, you will still hear it in the stillness and its sounds will lull you to sleep at night. The Kahutara PurePod sits on a cute little spur backing onto a large paddock. Nearby kanuka trees shelter the choir of birds you’ll hear from dawn to dusk.

FAQs

How do I choose?

With six different PurePod locations to select from, how to do you choose?

Good question! Each PurePod is set in a unique and secluded part of the beautiful New Zealand landscape, making it tricky to choose a favourite. Perhaps the answer is to include “pod-hopping” on your travel itinerary?

If you are travelling from the north, we recommend starting with 2 or 3 nights at either the Kahutara or Manakau PurePods, so you have plenty of time each day to check out all the wonderful activities available in the stunning Kaikoura region (whale watching, swimming with the seals, kayaking, hiking) before returning to the peace and tranquility of the PurePod each afternoon to enjoy a relaxed evening and a star-filled night.

Then, continue south down State Highway 1 for just over an hour, before leaving the main highway to head towards the coast and the Korimako PurePod, where you will be nestled into the native bush full of bird song with a stunning view out to the nearby bay on a beautiful and historic sheep farm or the Atatū PurePod, perched high above the coastline, with sweeping sea views and fabulous sunrises. If you enjoy mountain biking these two PurePods offer an off-road mountain bike looped 8km track ($18.50 per rider if you BYO bikes and $80 per rider if you hire electric bikes).

Or, if you are a wine-lover, head a little further south to the Greystone PurePod in Waipara, making sure you arrive before 4pm so you can stop in at the Greystone Cellar Door for a complimentary wine-tasting, before heading up to the PurePod to relax and soak in the sweeping views of the beautiful Waipara Valley. If you have packed your mountain bikes, then head out for a ride along the Waipara Valley Vineyard Trail, or perhaps a more sedate stroll along the walking tracks, or check out some of the local wineries, starting of course, with Greystone Wines!

From Waipara, continue your journey south on State Highway 1, perhaps stopping for a night in Christchurch if you need your fix of city life, before travelling on to the beautiful Pōhue PurePod on Banks Peninsula, about an hour from Christchurch (or two hours from Waipara), where you can enjoy the beautiful views of the historic Port Levy bay, surrounded by rolling hills and magnificent rocky outcrops.

You may wish to stay a couple of nights while on Banks Peninsula, so you can include a day trip to the beautiful Akaroa township, a historical French and British settlement nestled in the heart of an extinct volcano. Perhaps, include a harbour cruise or kayak tour to check out the home of the rarest and smallest marine dolphin, the Hector’s dolphins.

Is it too cold or hot with all that glass?

PurePods use the highest quality toughened, double and triple-glazed glass. Extra heat is provided by hidden radiators in the bedroom and bathroom. The heating and the hot water are heated using a combination of solar power and a gas boiler. You will find your PurePod luxuriously comfortable.

There is no air conditioning but a range of natures cooling devices (blinds, ceiling shades, sliding doors, open windows etc). On the hottest days we recommend pulling across the ceiling blind to add additional shade – the roof above the deck has also been designed to add shade. And, in the hottest part of a hot summer’s day, feel free to take the super comfy deck chairs into the shade of nearby trees.

Are there Wifi, TV, Movies etc?

There’s just a USB outlet and a bluetooth speaker (BYO music) – no wifi, no movies, no tv (but there is a telescope, star map, some books and games). Shocking, we know, but unplugging for a couple of days is a key part of the experience.

How long is the walk from the carpark to the PurePod?

The walk from the carpark to the PurePod is an important part of your PurePod experience; it introduces you to the local environment and reinforces the privacy and isolation of the location. We understand not everyone is keen on a strenuous or long hike, so we have done our best to keep the walk to between 5 and 10 minutes long and have avoided as many “steep bits” as we can – though the best views are usually higher up, so you do need to expect a bit of uphill walking. And, then sometimes there are locations which are just so spectacular that a longer walk is totally worth it!

Here’s a brief rundown on the walking track at each PurePod location:

Korimako PurePod – the shortest walk, at only 430m! There is a stile at the beginning of the track as you cross over a fence line, then the track gently (for the most part) makes it way up to the PurePod through a native forest full of the sound of bird-life. There are a few steps along the way on a couple of steep bits, and a small bridge across a creek. Walk time is just a couple of minutes for all you fit people, and just under 5 minutes for the rest of us.

Greystone PurePod – while this track is only 650m long, and only takes around 5-10 minutes to walk, it does include a stile at the beginning as you cross a fence line, and a few steep steps along the way. The track can also get a little slippery following wet weather. Good news for those of you with mobility issues – we can provide alternative instructions for this PurePod, which will enable you to drive pretty much right up to the PurePod, and this is the only PurePod location without steps to access the PurePod. Please note, the alternative instructions are only available to guests with diagnosed mobility issues as we aren’t able to use the alternative route for every booking (high-use of this alternative track would impact adversely on the operation of the vineyard).

Atatū PurePod – one of our favourite walks, and only 750m long. It starts with a nice flat walk following a paddock fence line, then after you pass through a farm gate you start to gently climb uphill, firstly along a farm track (where you can watch the sheep frolic in the nearby paddocks), then through a patch of native forest full of birdsong, before a final wee push uphill to the PurePod.

Manakau PurePod – this walk is 900m and will take you 10-15 minutes. The beginning of this track is shared with the Kahutara PurePod, as you first follow the fence line of a paddock, before entering a grove of kanuka trees. After crossing a small bridge, the track splits off to the left and after going up a few steps you emerge above the tree-line into a grassy paddock for your first glimpse of the Manakau PurePod, then it’s a final wee push up across the paddock to the PurePod.

Kahutara PurePod – this walk will take you about 15 minutes to travel the 950m, where you’ll walk past paddocks, through a grove of kanuka trees, on a farm track lined with trees, past a wetland area, before the final gentle climb up to the PurePod.

Pōhue PurePod – this is our most challenging walk. It is 1.2km long and while most of the track is at a gentle incline, overall you will be climbing around 140m in elevation, so for those of us not as fit as we used to be, you will find yourself puffing a little towards the top. There are also two stiles to climb over as the track passes over the fence line in two places, and following wet weather, some parts of the track can be a little muddy and slippery. Allow around 25 minutes for this walk, or a little longer depending on your fitness level and how many photo stops you will want to make as the views are stunning. There is an alternative (and slightly shorter) track that can be used during bad weather (info on this option will be supplied to you if heavy rain or snow is forecast for your stay).
