Malolo Island Resort Fiji

An idyllic Fiji island paradise where you can escape the stress of modern living and relax amongst golden sandy beaches, abundant coral reefs, swaying coconut palms and azure seas.

Malolo is an intimate, rustic resort built in the character of Fiji’s Colonial past with grand designs interspersed amongst South Pacific beach cottage style.   It’s about a bure near the beach, surrounded by the world’s friendliest people with a living and authentic culture. You will be served by the descendants of villagers who have lived there for thousands of years, offering true Fijian hospitality.  Perfect for families and couples alike, at Malolo, you can fill your day with a myriad of activities or simply unwind and do nothing at all.

100% owned by a local Fijian family, Malolo is all about reconnecting with family and friends without the distractions of “mod-cons”. Just the sounds of the coconut trees swaying and the ocean lapping the shore, under the bluest of skies by day and a blanket of stars by night.

DINING

From our selection of bars and dining venues, you can enjoy a casual snack by the beach, feast delicious gourmet sandwiches whilst overlooking the pools and gardens, or experience relaxed evening signature dining amongst the coconut palms and stars.

Executive Chef Gregory Llewellyn’s food philosophy is all about utilising as much local and healthy produce as possible and showcasing that directly onto the plate.

KIDS MENUS

We also understand the importance of tantalising kids’ taste buds. Fish fingers are created from the freshest of fish, hamburger patties are hand-made without any preservatives and the kitchen bakes craft breads, pastries and pizza bases the healthy way with mouthwatering results.

Certain accommodation packages include a “Kids Eat Free” component. These packages are available for kids 3 to 12 years inclusive. Conditions apply and service of these meals takes place in the Terrace Restaurant ONLY between 12.00pm and 2.00pm for lunch and 5.30pm to 6.30pm for dinner. Children who wish to dine with their parents in any outlet outside these specified “Kids Eat Free” dining times may do so but kids meals will be charged at a la carte menu prices. Parents can dine with their kids at the “Kids eat Free” area in Terrace Restaurant and order off the menus or buffets available at the time.

MEAL PLANS

Full meal plans are available but must be purchased for all occupants of the Bure for the entire stay.

Under the full meal plan you are entitled to eat in any of our 3 restaurants and enjoy FULL breakfast, 2 COURSE lunch and 3 COURSE dinner daily.

Surcharges apply for seafood platters and crustacean dishes and meats from our speciality meats menu.

DIETARY REQUIREMENTS AND SPECIAL REQUESTS

We are able to cope with most dietary requirements and allergies if we are told in advance. We can also cater for special requests but as we are a fairly remote island we do require at least 24 hrs notice to arrange.

ALCOHOL

Our bars and restaurants are not BYO liquor. We allow carry on duty free spirits and wine to be brought onto the resort for consumption in the privacy of your own bures. We do not allow cases of beer and wine to be brought on-site.

Happy Hour 5.30pm – 6.30pm in all Bars.

BEACHSIDE/JETTY & GROUP DINING

Experience a romantic candlelit dinner by the sea, either on the beach or our jetty. Enquiries regarding availability can be made with the Food and Beverage Manager and is subject to tides and weather conditions. Set up charges apply.

We understand how wonderful it is to travel as a group, especially with family and friends. Malolo is a small, intimate resort with only 46 rooms. Our dining areas and bars are also not large and therefore, big group tables can affect the efficiency of the operation, service delivery and general ambience for everyone, especially during high occupancy periods.

Treetops Restaurant

Located along the verandah at the other side of the Restaurant Complex and overlooking the adults’ pool, lounge areas and lush gardens, is our signature restaurant Treetops. Slightly more formal in style and service, Treetops offers an air-conditioned venue for our adult guests and children 13 years and above with a tantalising, A la Carte menu showcasing the full spectrum of Pacific Rim Cuisine with daily-changing Chef’s Specials.

Terrace Restaurant

Reminiscent of the old plantation homestead with its imposing entrance and wide open verandahs, the colonial inspired Restaurant Complex is set back from the beach, amongst tropical forest and gardens and overlooks the Resort’s two swimming pools.

The Terrace Restaurant is our main restaurant open daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner with seating for 100 people. Using only the finest and freshest produce the islands have to offer, our chefs prepare and offer a acific Rim A la Carte dining experience.

Our daily breakfast offering includes a wide variety of a hot and cold dishes with cereals, fresh tropical fruits and juices, freshly baked breads and pastries and of course a chef to cook eggs-to-order.

A la Carte menus are also available daily for lunch and dinner.

The “Kids Eat Free” set meals are also served exclusively in the Terrace Restaurant.

Beach Bar

Located at the water’s edge with spectacular sunset views over the ocean and fringing reef. Influenced by its location to the beach and being a “barefoot in the sand ” venue, the menu is beach café style offering fresh salads, gourmet and traditional pizzas, hamburgers, rolls, beer-battered fish and chips and a selection of meats and seafood from the grill.

In the evenings the Beach Bar is the venue for some fun, friendly team and family activities and the daily “Happy Hour” offering the “Cocktail of the Day” and live music.

The Beach Bar is open 7 days for lunch and 6 nights a week for dinner service.

Bars

Malolo has three bars offering a fabulous range of cocktails and mocktails, old and new world wines, local and imported beers and spirits – all in an atmosphere of tropical relaxation.

The most popular spot for sunset drinks is undoubtedly the Beach Bar. Enjoy the daily “Happy Hour” and Cocktail of the Day created with Fijian fun and flavours, whilst listening to the guitar sounds of the Malolo Serenaders.

For the adults, there is our famous swim-up pool bar in our adults pool. Surrounding the pool is the fabulous al fresco lounge and day-bed cabanas, the perfect place to relax in the shade, whilst sipping on one of our tropical creations.

Dining at Treetops? Enjoy a pre-dinner drink at the bar, on the verandahs or deck amidst the background sounds of the Malolo Serenaders below on the pool deck.

Your Private Paradise

For that special occasion, we can arrange a private dinner* on our jetty or on the beach under the stars.   For a small set-up fee you will have your own private waiter and be serenaded by one of our Malolo band boys.  Why not try our sumptuous seafood platter for two with Chef’s fresh catch-of-the day?   Just speak with the resort team on arrival and they will arrange this for you.

Experience

At Malolo you can fill your day with activities or simply unwind and do nothing at all. There is an array of activities and experiences on offer to keep even the most active of guests occupied.

For the families, there is a free kids club for 4-12 year olds and plenty of water sports fun for everyone including Hobie cats, kayaking, banana boat rides, stand-up paddle boards, windsurfing, coral viewing, dolphin spotting and more.

For the romantics at heart, we have some very special options perfect for those cherished moments such as a romantic beachside or jetty dinner or perhaps just hanging out in one of the many double hammocks and soaking up the sensational views across the Pacific Ocean. Or why not indulge in our beautiful rainforest Spa or lounge around our fabulous swimming pools?

SNORKELLING

The islands of the Mamanucas are rich with coral reefs and a vast variety of amazing tropical fish.  Malolo Island is surrounded by a protected, fringing coral reef brimming with marine life, making snorkelling ideal.

If you want to venture further afield and explore other snorkel sites, we offer daily trips to various sites nearby and sometimes you may even end up in an undiscovered part of the islands, seeing amazing marine life for the first time.

FISHING

Within the immediate area surrounding Malolo Island, there is a marine reserve and fishing is strictly forbidden. However, we do offer a variety of fishing excursions to areas where keen anglers can troll for Tuna or perhaps a Giant Trevally. Also, Dog Tooth Tuna, Mahi Mahi, Wahoo, Rainbow Runner, Barracuda, Coral Trout, Scad and Billfish are just some of the fish that swim our waters.

In line with our Sustainable Tourism Policy we do not actively fish for Marlin or Sail Fish. In the event that one is caught it is our Policy to “catch and release”.

SURFING

Close to the Resort are some of the world’s most famous surf breaks found along the southern part of the Malolo Barrier Reef.   We offer surf tours to internationally acclaimed Cloudbreak, Wilkes Passage, Desperation and Restaurants.   Daily trips can be taken from Malolo –  talk to our Activities team for more information.

WALKING TRAILS

There are several walking trails varying in length and difficulty from the resort. Our walks currently include Jona’s Lookout with magnificent views over the resort and island waters, the Ridge Track to Naroba Point and also Mangrove Walk.

VILLAGE TRIP

Here you will experience how our indigenous land owners live at the local villages of Yaro and Solevu by taking the “Shell Village Tour”. Solevu is also the home of the Paramount Chief of the Mamanuca Islands.

Or why not experience a traditional Fijian church service available to guests each Sunday. Fiji is a multi-religious country represented by all major religions. The majority of Fijians are Christians and on Malolo Island there is a Methodist service each Sunday at Yaro Village where the highlight is to experience the exquisite voices of the local Fijian choir.

ISLAND HOPPING

Often the best time to be on the water is in the early morning before the wind picks up and it is certainly the best time for an early morning island hopping trip. We take you past Castaway Island, Mana Island, Matamanoa Island and finally MonuRiki Island where we stop for a swim, snorkel and walk along the beach. MonuRiki Island is one of the most stunningly beautiful islands in the Mamanucas and is where the famous “Cast Away” movie with Tom Hanks was filmed. The trip then heads north around Monu Island, west round the top of Yanuya Island, past Tokoriki Island before turning south for the return trip past Tavua Island and finally stopping at Mana Sand Bank for another swim and snorkel, before heading back for a late breakfast at the resort.

SUNSET CRUISE

Malolo is referred to by the local Fijians as “Na Siga e dromu I Malolo”. Translated this means “That place where the sun comes to rest.” The sunsets in and around Malolo can be quite magnificent and what better way to enjoy the scene than from one of our sunset cruises whilst sipping a glass of sparkling wine, enjoying Chef’s canapés and listening to the sounds of one of our Malolo serenaders as you sail around the island.

ADVENTURE

For the more adventurous, why not try a Jet Ski Safari to the nearby island of MonuRiki or a perhaps a Parasail around the Malolo waters. We also offer water skiing and wake boarding.

WET WEATHER PROGRAM

We do occasionally get rainy days in Fiji. But this won’t stop you from enjoying a walk in the rain or even a swim or a snorkel.  We also run a wet weather program and here you can join the activities team as they demonstrate the many ways to tie a Sulu/Sarong, learn to weave baskets and hats from palm fronds, learn some Fijian and hear about the Fijian culture and some of the famous island legends while sampling a bowl of Kava (Yaqona).

MEKE AND LOVO

The Meke (traditional dance) is performed every Saturday night by members of our staff.   Here you will see and learn about local traditions and stories through dance and song.    This is followed by dinner which is a combination of the traditional Lovo food (earth oven cooking) and South Pacific BBQ buffet.

KAVA CEREMONY

The drinking of Kava is an important Fijian tradition. On Wednesday evenings, join the activities team for a traditional Kava ceremony on the pool lawns. Learn about the origins of Kava, the plant and its attributes and the protocols surrounding the ceremony itself.

DIVING

Our Dive Centre is operated by Subsurface Fiji, a PADI 5 Star IDC.

A short boat ride away and just below the surface is another world. A world of vivid turquoise waters, abundant with beautiful hard and soft corals, teeming with an amazing variety of colourful reef fish. Choose a relaxing dive in the calm inner reef waters or explore the deeper ocean side Mamanuca barrier reef where dolphins, manta rays, turtles and large pelagic fish are your dive companions.

For certified divers, we will take you to a choice of 44 dive sites in the Mamanuca Islands. Expect to see caves, pinnacles, walls, a crashed B26 Bomber from WW2, a ship wreck and experience the shark encounter dive at the world- famous ‘Supermarket’dive site. Add in an abundance of tropical fish, large pelagic fish, and the colourful soft corals that Fiji is famous for and you will want to keep exploring these magnificent reefs. Dive trips depart daily.
